My husband (a senior) took it for 2 years. Then it suddenly stopped having any effect whatsoever even at a higher dose. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

Has your husband had a full testosterone blood panel done? Sounds like it could well be a hormone issue, not the efficacy of V.

I have been on it about 3 years. It still gives a good hard erection. I get the 50mg and split them in half. My cost is over $10 a pill. The only draw back is "I can run the race, but I have a problem finishing the race". Not sure if it is the V or the other meds that I take.

Yes, my husband has had hormone levels checked. Everything normal there. We just can't figure the whole thing out. He's perfectly healthy and active. He's not on any medication at all. Nothing seems to solve the problem. He is under the care of a urologist, but he doesn't seem to fully comprehend the problem.

Really need to know your husband's T level. There's a near epidemic of doctors telling their patients their T is "fine" or "normal" simply because it falls within the labs "normal range" which varies from roughly 250-1100. It's felt by many hormone specialists that a man needs to be between 600-800 to be functioning optimally. It is VERY possible that your husband had a "low-normal" T score, like 400, for instance, and the doc said "T is fine." I tested and scored 235, which was clearly below the normal range. My Urologist completely sluffed it off saying, "your just a little low - it's fine." 235 is what a 100 year old man should have, it's not "a little low!" I parted company with that Uro at that point. The other thing is the doctor probably didn't test for Estradiol. If Estradiol is high, than even a high T score might not be enough to function normally. You have to know both T and E, and they need to be in the right balance or the T score alone doesn't mean much. I'd really suggest you get him retested by a doc who knows something about hormone replacement. Testosterone CAN affect the efficacy of Viagra and I really suspect that is what is going on in your husband's case. Report the T results here too ... there are numerous experts on ths subject who can tell you what you're looking at.

Also have his free testosterone tested. The free T is what is the most important. High estradiol (E2) can lower the free T even though total T is high.

kelly790

Thanks for advice. Will pursue further hormone testing with urologist. His main problem seems to be that while he can attain an erection, it's not as firm as it always was. I think urologists are of the opinion that if it is semi-hard then it's not considered much of a problem.

"T level needs to be between 600-800 to be functioning optimally"?! - probably incorrect. Is there any scientific evidence? Do you know there's a FEEDBACK mechanism of the hormonal response. In fact passively injection of Testosterone might finally suppress the production of Testosterone by your body. "Testosterone CAN affect the efficacy of Viagra" - one of the causes but usually isn't the major cause. Erection is the complex interaction of nerve system & endocrine system & blood vessel system. The role of Viagra is keeping the dilation of penis blood vessels, actually it has nothing to do on WHAT causing the ED

Yes, I am aware that exogenous testosterone can cause the testicles to stop producing naturally - that is why the good hormone docs prescribe HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), which preserves testicle function, and anti-estrogen medication, which keeps the aromataze enzyme in the body from converting testosterone to estradiol, which would be a problem. The balance between Estradiol and Testosterone is as important as what the testosterone number is. And yes, testosterone can be a cause of problems with the PDE5 drugs. Check out Dr. Stephen Lamm's book "The Hardness Factor" ... he clearly advises that these drugs are not as effective if your problem is low testosterone. You're right, an erection requires a complicated chain of events. If you have messed up hormones, especially high estradiol, the drugs aren't going to help much. It's definitely something that needs to be checked out.

Please note that the question is "V stop working after using for two years". The T level is within normal value within that period; it is unlikely that the T-level drop to low value after he took viagra for two years, conversely, frequent sexual activities might in turn maintain the production of Testosterone. Please note that the role of Viagra or PDE5-inhibitors in maintaining erection depends on lot of proper body functions: blood vessel system, nervous system, hormonal system, etc; don't think the hormonal system is everything; believe it or not, severe Gastrointestinal disease may cause ED as a side effect....

Speaking of Low Testosterone levels, my Husband had his tested, 344 (normal range stated at 250-1100), Free testosterone 52.3 (normal 35.0-155.0) and Free % was 1.52 (normal 1.50-2.2). His sexual desire Declined, but we are still able to have sex every other morning satisfactory. A few occasions we used Viagra at night but if we stick to mornings, this is not necessary for him. I was just giving an example of Low testosterone and sexual function from our experience. He is 45 yrs old.
