How long do you have to keep taking Allipurinol.. I have been on it for 5 years without another Kidney Stone. I originally had 2 in 6 months and I over produce calcium oxilate and uric acid.. I want to know if I can go off this medication now or will my kidney stones come back. Also is there something I can do without medication to help them from now coming back? Thank you so much

I have been on allopurinol(zyloprim) for years to reduce levels of uric acid in my system. According to my doctors (various specialists) allopurinol is one of the safest and most effective drugs ever to be produced. It is also quite cheap to produce. It takes some time to start reducing serum levels of uric acid but once it starts it contiues to lower it in a safe manner. From what I undersand the uric acid is produced as a results of the bodies reaction to certain food types ,namely purines. I was recently told that low purine diets are not considered an effective way to limit uric acid production. The food groups high in purines are considered essential for good health. Looks like allopurinol may be part of your life.

I too, take Allopurinol (100 mg at night). I started after having unbearable gout attacks. My doctor told me that the gout was a direct effect of my other medications, which I coud not avoid with my kidney disease. The uric acid settles in your body and forms painful crystals, thus gout. It hurts like #$ll! I take the Allopurinol to avoid this, and it has worked perfectly since I began taking it approx. 5 years ago.
